An egg coffee or Cà Phê Trứng is a Vietnamese drink traditionally prepared with egg yolks, sugar, condensed milk, and dark coffee powder (often called: ‘robusta coffee’)
Egg coffee was first introduced to the world in 1946, during the French War when there was a serious shortage of milk. A Vietnamese man named Nguyen Van Giang - a bartender working at the renowned Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel in Hanoi figured out the way to make a coffee fix without milk. He mixed creamy egg yolks with sugar to create a perfect substitute and put it on top of the coffee cup. And that’s how the egg coffee got famous around the world and adored by most of the people.
Nguyen Van Giang soon opened up his own coffee shop and he is still known by all Vietnamese people as the original Vietnamese egg coffee king. His shop - Cafe Giang is located in Hanoi’s Old Quarter and is managed by his son - Nguyen Van Do.
Below here are the opinions and feelings of foreigners toward their experience with Vietnamese Egg Coffee. (Gathered from Quora.)
“ Vietnamese Egg Coffee is a real treat” - Fariha Sajjad ·
“I’d say its somewhat like a dessert. A slightly liquidy forthy dessert. In no way does it taste like egg, because its very well blended with the condensed milk. You can try to make it at home with this recipe. See for yourself if you’ll like it. Most of all, its a new experience! So be open to it!” - Steffi George ·

“ It sounds fairly strange. Egg coffee is a Vietnamese drink which is traditionally prepared with egg yolks, sugar, condensed milk and coffee. The drink is made by beating egg yolks with sugar and coffee, then extracting the coffee into the half of the cup, followed by a similar amount of egg cream, which is prepared by heating and beating the yolks. Egg coffee was described as a "liquid tiramisu". The drink is served in cafes throughout Hanoi, and has been a staple since the 1950s, with one barista describing it as appearing on"every cafe menu". The cup is served inside a bowl of hot water to retain its temperature”. - Jacob Uyen

“Like a Tiramisu! Well that’s how I really felt it was. It takes getting used to but you should really try it. At first I thought that it was made from egg white. I was surprised to find that it was made with egg yolk whipped with sugar.“
I wouldn’t say that the Vietnamese egg coffee is a pick me up through the day. No! I would say that it is something that I would pick it up as a nightcap or a desert. The Vietnamese have some really interesting coffees.” - Penny Fernandes

“OUT OF THE WORLD is how i describe it. The coffee itself is very rich and the egg frost is so creamy and aromatic. I would please my palate with the egg frosting first, scoop by scoop, then enjoy the coffee the way a connoisseur would enjoy a good glass of wine. The coffee is a very traditional recipe which retains the rustic taste of the past, it is the story of the good old days. Take a sip, swirl it in your mouth and let yourself drown in the flush of memories.” - Anonymous

- “Hi, as a coffee lover, I have tasted lots of coffee, but the one thing deserves the best one is egg coffee at Giang coffee.”
- “I have tried it a few times as I always love having experiences. The one and the only place either myself going there alone or taking friend is Giang Cafe on Nguyen Huu Huan Street where they claim creating the first ones. Honestly, I don't remember what it tastes except the fatty part which probably comes from the egg. However, I like how talkative and friendly the owners are. It's also a unique place to have a coffee since the others on the same street look kinda fancy and modern. I believe it's worth to try out since it is only 20,000 VND.” - Anonymous

- “I personally prefer Vietnamese Egg Coffee from Han coffee in Nguyen Huu Huan street HN. It seems they use better ingredients like better coffee and better eggs. Btw, this question remind me, I would go there today :)))” - Anonymous
- “I recommend the Vietnamese egg coffee, especially there is an old dingy cafe in Hanoi by the lake. Forgetting the name, but it is the oldest cafe of the city and the family has been serving the world’s strongest smoothest coffee (Robusta is strong, but the yolk makes it smooth) since two generations. I loved it so much!” - Users named ‘Only Good Things’.
- “We just loved the rich and robust flavor of this coffee which we tasted in Hanoi.” - Low Borden.

- Originally answered: “Have you ever tried egg coffee? If so, did you like it? A popular Vietnamese brunch place near me is known for their egg coffee and while it looks delicious, the thought of egg coffee kind of grosses me out.”
- “Maybe it is like an egg creme that has no egg. Otherwise Stop Being afraid and just try it.”
- “If you haven’t tried Vietnamese egg coffee, or ca phe trung, then I think you will be pleasantly surprised, especially if you love coffee and love dessert.”
